If the reason for storage is to cut emissions, then the electrical grid is probably less than half of the solution. Huge electrical savings can be made with district heating/cooling, it's cheap to make and store molten salt and ice. Making synthetic fuel for flow batteries/fuel cells solves the capacity issue for trucks, trains, ships.
